“A nationally-recognized Christian legal group is demanding that a Colorado high school protect female students students from a boy who is using the girls’ restroom and allegedly making harassing comments.
The Pacific Justice Institute (PJI), based in Sacramento, California, recently sent a letter to officials at Florence High School to ask that the matter be promptly addressed.
According to the organization, parents of teenage girls at the high school contacted PJI to express concern after their daughters said that a boy, who identifies as a girl, has been using the restroom and making inappropriate comments. The male student reportedly uses the boys’ and girls’ restrooms interchangeably, and is thus not consistent in his gender identity.
However, when parents approached school officials about the matter, they were informed that the male student must be permitted to use the girls’ facilities. PJI states that some students were told that they would be dismissed from their school teams or punished in other ways if they continued to lodge complaints about the male student.
“This is a nightmare scenario for the teenage girls—some of them freshmen—and their parents at this school,” PJI staff attorney Matthew McReynolds, wrote in a recent statement about the matter. “This is exactly the kind of horror story we have been warning would accompany the push for radical transgender rights in schools, and it is the type of situation that LGBT activists have been insisting would not happen.”
But the school district denies that any harassment has taken place.
“Nothing has actually been verified,” Superintendent Rhonda Vendetti told the Transadvocate. “This is one parent basically bringing their viewpoint about this situation to the media because they weren’t getting the responses that they hoped they would get from the district, from parents of students at the high school, or from the board and myself.”
But McReynolds is standing by the allegations.
“We have received additional reports of specific, inappropriate statements made by this student, and we are working to corroborate those reports,” he stated.
McReynolds explained further to WND that the Christian legal organization is seeking a resolution to the matter that would be amicable to all parties involved. For now, female students are being advised to use the faculty restrooms if they feel uncomfortable.
“Our students are in a scenario where they’re being told, ‘If you don’t want to be in this situation where this guy walks in while you’re in the bathroom, then you’ve got to confine yourself to one staff bathroom that is very inconvenient, that’s not even open all the time that they’re on campus for athletic activities and things like that,” McReynolds said. “[They’re being told that] you just have to give up your right to use the other dozen or so bathrooms on campus. You just have to clear out so that this one other student can do whatever he wants.’”
“If the teachers are willing to let the girls or the guys use the faculty bathroom, why aren’t they willing to let this person use the faculty bathroom?” parent Juan Chavez asked local television station KDVR.
PJI says that it is asking the school to ensure that privacy rights will be protected and that girls will not be forced to give up the restroom as some have suggested.
“We’re not going to stand by and let 99.7% of our students lose their privacy and free speech rights just because .3% of the population are gender-confused,” said PJI President Brad Dacus. “LGBT activists are sacrificing the safety and sanity of our schools to push an extreme political agenda. This battle is no longer confined to California or Colorado; it is spreading to every part of the nation. It is crucial that we act now to prevent a crippling blow to our constitutional freedoms.”
